Portland to Skamania

Last weekend Mike and I took one of our last trips together before his upcoming deployment.  Mike has been talking about visiting Portland for quite a while.  He really loves the city, but I had never been to Portland.  I picked Mike up Friday afternoon from Fort Lewis.  He had spent a week in the field, so the trip was much needed for both of us.
Roadtrip
We stayed at the Paramount Hotel which I chose because of its great location.  From the hotel, Mike and I walked around the entire city.  We ate dinner at Beaker and Flask; Mike had Wagyu beef and I had beef short ribs.  Both the drinks and food were delicious.  Next, we found ourselves at a wine bar for wine and dessert.  The night ended with a long walk for doughnuts from the famous Voodoo Doughnut.

Saturday morning Mike and I had coffee from Stumptown Coffee Roasters.  Our favorite coffee shop in Tacoma (Satellite Coffee) brews Stumptown so we knew it wouldn't disappoint.  We explored Powell's City of Books which had the most amazing selection of used books.  Mother's Bistro provided a wonderful brunch experience...there is nothing better than waffles with fresh blackberries.

I was really impressed with the city of Portland.  Mike and I really loved walking the streets, browsing the shops, and exploring the food carts.  I would dare to say that I like Portland better than Seattle.  There is just something about it.

Saturday afternoon, Mike and I drove about an hour outside of Portland to Skamania Lodge.  This getaway location has a special place in our hearts.  About two years ago, Mike and I visited Skamania as part of an Army sponsored marriage retreat.  Not only did we really enjoy the time together, the lodge itself was simply breathtaking.  It provides the feel of one of the best resorts with the amazing backdrop of the Colombia River Gorge.  That weekend two years ago was the weekend we welcomed the third member of our family, Buckley.  It was at the Huckleberry Festival outside of Skamania where we fell in love with the cutest little Beagle pup.  Last weekend at Skamania happened to be their annual beer-fest.  We purchased tickets to take part in beer tasting with a variety of local breweries. Mike and I met a wonderful couple during the event and enjoyed a great dinner with them.
Cheers!

The Lodge

Mike and I are so very lucky to have the opportunity to spend quality time together.  Weekends like these are especially memorable with his departure looming over our heads.  Over the next nine months I will undoubtedly think back to the memories made this weekend.

Sprinkles from the Shower

This week I co-hosted a bridal shower at my house.  One of the girls from work is getting married next week, and I offered to have the shower at my house.  I was a little worried that the shower wouldn't come together (mostly due to a lack of communication between the hosts), but I am happy to say the shower was quite nice.  There wasn't a huge turnout, but all those that came seemed to have a lovely time.  Jessye (my co-host) provided almost all the food: cheese ball, grape salad, chicken asian salad, watermelon, etc.  I made spinach dip, decorated cookies, and made a strawberry lemonade.  I filled the house with flowers and hung a few decorations.  Here is a peek at the event...

Falling for Football

Notice how puppy centered my posts become when Mike is away?  Just get ready for a 9 month puppy-fest starting in October :(

On another note, football season has begun.  After our pool party, Buckley and I got suited up for a UCLA game.  Many pictures were taken...
Go Bruins!

Football Kisses

Today there is a crispness to the air that is most certainly a thing of Autumn.  I cannot lie that I am a little excited for sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes, scarves, and boots.  The only thing that makes me a little sad will be the lack of family football time this fall.  While Mike and I will have a bit of time this September, most of the cheering this football season will be up to Buckley and me.  My love for watching football on the couch with Mike started long ago at Pepperdine.

Cheering is exhausting!

Puppy Pool Party

I recently discovered a local park with a lazy river and great pool.  Sadly, I discovered the pool just in time for it to close for the summer.  The only redeeming factor is that the last weekend of the summer, the pool is open to four-legged friends for a puppy pool party.  I met a friend from work (and her two dogs) there for an hour and a half of fun in the sun.  Although Buckley did nothing more than touch her toes to the water, we all had a great time.  I cannot say enough about the park system near where we live.  When the weather is nice, there is no place I'd rather be.
Waiting to get in
